Quite frankly, so many movies have been filmed in Utah, we had to narrow the list down to some of our favorites, featuring old classics and fun-filled flicks! With all these great movies, just imagine all the celebrities that have worked right here in the Salt Lake valley. Let’s take a look at some true classics.

Classic Films from Utah’s South

When it comes to Utah’s beautiful and scenic southern areas, such as Moab and Monument Valley, it’s no wonder these fantastic regions provided the settings for so many movies. In fact, numerous classic westerns were filmed here. Does the name John Wayne sound familiar? Check out our list below:

  • Stagecoach (1939): Filmed in Monument Valley, Stagecoach was John Wayne’s first starring role, and director John Ford won an Oscar for best director!
  • How the West Was Won (1962): Not only did this star-packed film win 3 Oscars, filming for the movie also took place in Monument Valley and Cedar Mountain.
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969): Featuring scenes from St. George, Snow Canyon, and Zion National Park, the film features Robert Redford, who loved Utah so much that he decided to buy land here, which is now known as Sundance.
  • Forrest Gump (1994): Much different from these western films, some scenes from Forrest Gump were also filmed in Monument Valley, namely the scene where Forrest decides to return home.

While many movies filmed in Utah were set in the south, quite a few well-known flicks were filmed in our neck of the woods too. While we don’t have the scenic, desert views of our fellow south, Utah’s north features wondrous mountains and fantastic scenes. Take a look at the list below and see if any of your favorite movies were filmed here!

  • The Sandlot (1993): A true 90s classic, The Sandlot was filmed all across northern Utah, including Ogden, Rose Park, Midvale, and American Fork. While the boys’ field has since been covered, the public pool is still in use in Ogden.
  • Dumb and Dumber (1994): This classic comedy features scenes from Provo, Park City, and neighboring Salt Lake City. Salt Lake’s airport even makes an appearance. Remember Mary’s home in Lloyd’s dream? That’s in Sandy!
  • Drive Me Crazy (1999): Filmed entirely in Utah, Salt Lake, Ogden, and Sandy all made the cut for the funny romantic comedy.
  • High School Musical (2006): All three of the High School Musical movies were entirely filmed in Utah, featuring East High School in Salt Lake City! Other locations include the University of Utah, Murray, Midvale, and St. George.

As you can see, Utah is quite popular with producers and directors. The list of movies filmed in Utah goes on, but these were some of our favorites.
